MY JOURNEY LIVING WITH DOWN SYNDROME

Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition. I happened to have that condition. People with Down Syndrome have some sort of learning disability, delayed development, speech delay , short stature among others characteristics.

Early intervention can greatly increase quality of life.

Very often, parents and people in general, have low expectations of children with Down syndrome. Please have high expectations for your kids, it will encourage them to do better.

“Disability doesn’t define the individual.

There is joy, love and beauty in the simple act of being and exist” Lito Ramirez

ACADEMICS

Down syndrome can affect learning abilities in different ways, but it usually causes mild to moderate intellectual impairment. Inclusive education can provide better language and academic outcomes.

MUSIC

Children with Down syndrome naturally gravitate towards music, there’s something about music that they just adore. Research supports the ability of music to improve memory, communication, and social skills. Music provides a fun and motivating way to tackle challenging or repetitive tasks.

My Parents Have High Expectations !!

Parents need to raise the expectations and acknowledge that the time taken to acquire many skills is considerably longer in some areas of learning, but it is not impossible.

Message for Parents

Expect more from your child  and s/he will give more. If you challenge your child, s/he will be encourage to try harder.
You are their inspiration.

Never give up.

Early Intervention

The first years of life are a critical time in a child’s development. All young children go through the most rapid and developmentally significant changes during this time. During these early years, the basic physical, cognitive, language, social, and self-help skills that lay the foundation for future progress are achieved according to predictable developmental patterns. Children with Down syndrome typically face delays in certain areas of development, so early intervention is highly recommended. It can begin any time after birth, but the sooner it starts, the better. (NDSS)
